The Wetherby Whaler in Guiseley hosted a couple’s wedding vow renewal reception, which saw more than 60 guests enjoying The Whaler’s renowned fish and chips. 

Ron and Sandra Midgley, who are originally from Guiseley and have been married for 46 years, celebrated renewing their vows at The Wetherby Whaler as they currently live in Penarth, South Wales, and really miss Yorkshire fish and chips.

As Ron (69) and Sandra (64) are both celebrating big birthdays this year, Ron surprised Sandra with a ceremony at St. Oswalds Church in Guiseley to renew their vows and decided that the famous fish and chip restaurant in Guiseley would be the perfect place to celebrate the occasion. 

The Wetherby Whaler in Guiseley, the former and original Harry Ramsden’s, underwent a £500,000 refurbishment prior to opening 12 months ago, designed to bring the restaurant up to date, while maintaining the atmosphere the restaurant was renowned for. The famous chandeliers were updated with brand new fittings, ensuring the restaurant will deliver the same impact on 21st Century customers as it did 80 years ago.

Phillip Murphy, Owner of The Wetherby Whaler, said:  “It was great to see Ron, Sandra and all their guests having such a fantastic time at The Wetherby Whaler. We have breathed life back into the Guiseley restaurant and it is back to the quality that it was previously well-known for, making it a great place to celebrate special events.”   

Ron Midgley said: “As myself and Sandra are originally from Guiseley, I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than with proper Yorkshire fish and chips from the best place in town! Our guests came from many parts of the UK and some American friends of ours said if they could have made the event, the idea of the Yorkshire fish and chips in Guiseley would have been the clincher!

“We really enjoyed our special day and all of our family and friends were extremely impressed with The Wetherby Whaler. We would like to say a big thank you to the members of staff at the Guiseley restaurant who really looked after us and couldn’t do more to help make our day extra special.”
