The Dolphin Becomes Northern Ireland’s Only MSC Certified Fish & Chip Shop

Northern Ireland’s No.1 Fish and Chip Shop, The Dolphin Takeaway, Dungannon is making waves again by becoming the only independent retail business in Northern Ireland to be Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified.

The Tyrone takeaway’s MSC certification means customers at the Dolphin can be assured that the cod they are eating comes from a certified sustainable wild-catch fishery, with full traceability from boat to fork. The Dolphin will proudly display the internationally recognised blue MSC ecolabel in the shop and on their marketing materials and the proactive chippy is also bringing the sustainability message to a new generation of young fish friers.

The Dolphin’s new certified MSC status was officially announced at a frying masterclass(9th December 2015) held in Dungannon for South West College catering students by the Dolphin’s owner, Malachy Mallon.

Speaking at the event, Malachy Mallon said, "

"We congratulate Malachy on his latest success and are delighted to host his MSC announcement as part of our ongoing learning partnership. Our young catering students have been fascinated to hear about the Dolphin’s sustainable and traceable fish sourcing policies and I believe Malachy’s example will help inspire them towards responsible business practices in their future careers.”

Commenting on the well-deserved success the deputy First Minster, Martin McGuinness said:"I congratulate Malachy Mallon for this significant achievement. This award is evidence Malachy has successfully combined a quality customer service with sustainability which will be a great source of satisfaction to customers and also an inspiration to the catering students of the South West College.

"It is the entrepreneurial spirit of people like Malachy Mallon and the students of the South West College that are central to the development of the local economy.”

Councillor Linda Dillon, Chair of Mid Ulster Council attended the Dolphin’s MSC announcement event and offered her congratulations.

"Well done to The Dolphin on achieving MSC certification and for Malachy’s commitment, not only to sustainable fishing procedures, but also for sharing his passion and his talent with the students at South West College. He is a shining example of how local retailers can take the lead to differentiate their business and I hope he will inspire others to do the same.”
