Food sector hoping to attract new talent in Grimsby!

An event which aims to give young people an insight into the diverse range of careers within the food sector is taking place in Grimsby next month (Thursday 22 February).

The Future of Food Careers event is organised and co-ordinated by the Grimsby Institute and Seafish, with some of the biggest food employers in the Humber region exhibiting and speaking at the event.

Now in its second year, the event hosted at the Grimsby Institute,will showcase a wide range of career opportunities as well as the benefits associated with a career in the food sector. Open to local schools, the pupils will have the opportunity to talk to a variety of employers including Young’s Seafood, Seachill and Morrisons, to find out how they can get in to the industry.

Julie Snowden, Account Manager at Seafish, said: "This event is designed to promote the vast range of career choices that are available in food businesses, with a specific focus on the seafood sector.

It’s no secret that the food industry will face some challenges/changes once we leave the EU so it is important to showcase this exciting and diverse sector, highlighting the scope of opportunities available to make it attractive to the future local workforce. There’s a sea of career opportunities , both locally and across the UK with roles ranging from manufacturing, new product development, buying and marketing to name a few.”

"Students attending the event will have the chance to network with industry representatives who we hope will inspire young people to take up roles in the industry.”

The event draws interest from the manufacturing, global trade, retail and foodservice sectors of the UK food industry. Guest speakers will enhance the day with real-life experiences and advice and there is a particular focus on attracting more females into the traditionally male dominated industry. Speakers include Amanda Perry, a successful entrepreneur and Karen Galloway who has worked in the food sector for 25 years. There will also be live demonstrations from Gary Hooper Owner of GCH Fishmongers and the self-titled ^Girly Fishmonger^ Emma McKeating.

Speaking ahead of the event, Emma McKeating said: "I love being a fishmonger, no two days are ever the same. From merchandising the stand with the fresh catch to interacting with customers, my role allows me to be creative on a daily basis and share my knowledge and passion with others.

"I believe that the food sector is one of a kind; it’s full of opportunities and is a very viable option for those after an exciting career path. I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences with the students on the 22nd February.”
