Energy Builds for the World’s Biggest Fish Finger Sandwich Zoom Call

Article Date: 2020-07-01

With one week to go until the Fishermen’s Mission gather the most amount of people eating a Fish Finger Sandwich via a Zoom call, the energy and excitement is building. This innovative fundraising initiative is attracting support and endorsements from some very recognisable names and faces.

The Fishermen’s Mission is attempting to get the most people eating a Fish Finger Sandwich at one time whilst also on a zoom call as part of the “Fish Friday” fundraising initiative which the charity hosts each year.

Dean Lawrence, Corporate Partnerships manager for the Charity said: “Fish Friday historically has seen the nations fishmongers and eateries come together to encourage more people to eat fish while raising funds for the charity, however due to the situation with COVID-19 we had to re-think our strategy.”

Dean further commented: The Fishermen’s Mission spend more than 2 million pounds each year on providing our emergency and welfare services. As a result of the pandemic we have helped fishing families access grants totalling 250,000 over the last three months but have also seen a dramatic drop in our voluntary income, so a new virtual approach was needed.”

The World’s Biggest Fish Finger Sandwich Zoom call will be hosted by BBCs Daphne Skinnard and will feature live cooking demonstrations from top celebrity chefs, Nathan Outlaw and Tom Brown. Actress and friend of the charity, Sophie Thompson will also be sharing her love of the dish. The event, which is endorsed by the “Sea For Yourself” campaign from Seafish, will allow attendees to download bespoke recipe cards created by the celebrity chefs of the day and others. Fish Finger Sandwich fans will also be encouraged to eat more fish and support the UKs fishing industry.

Marcus Coleman, CEO at Seafish, said: “As an island nation, a love of seafood is built into our collective psyche and fish finger sandwiches are one of the most popular, simplest and tastiest ways to enjoy the bounty of our seas.

“We can’t wait to see the exciting new twists on an old classic from the world-renowned chefs taking part in the Fisherman’s Mission Zoom call. We have seafood recipes for all tastes and budgets on our Fish is the Dish website including fish finger sandwich inspiration, but no doubt Tom Brown and Nathan Outlaw will be able to elevate the humble treat even further.”

Ali Godfrey, Business Development Director for the Fishermen’s Mission said: “We could never do this alone. We are indebted to our friends and supporters, other charities that contribute to our cause and to those who always are prepared to help. The Fish Finger Sandwich lunch would never happen without their help and we are thrilled with the help from our friends, chef, celebrities and everyone else who knows us

A donation of at least £3 to the Fishermen’s Mission will allow you to join the World’s Biggest Fish Finger Sandwich Zoom Call which will takes place on Fish Friday - 3rd July 2020 from 12 – 1pm.
