May 9, 2025A UK-wide Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) has moved a step closer after the UK Deposit Management Organisation (UKDMO) was confirmed as its official operator for England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland.
The scheme will require consumers to pay a small deposit on single-use drinks containers, which will be refunded when the container is returned. It aims to cut waste, boost recycling, and reduce litter.
Originally planned for 2023 in Scotland and later pushed to 2024 and 2025, the UK-wide rollout is now scheduled for October 2027.
The UKDMO will manage operations, including logistics, refunds, and coordination with retailers and producers. While environmental groups welcome the progress, some have raised concerns about the delays.
Once live, the scheme is expected to align the UK with other countries successfully using similar systems to tackle packaging waste.
