April 15, 2025Hospitality businesses that embed sustainability into their operations are increasingly seeing profitable returns, according to the Zero Carbon Forum. At the Forum’s latest CEO Roundtable, industry leaders came together to explore how aligning profit with purpose is delivering real, measurable benefits.
The consensus was clear: companies that prioritise sustainability are reaping rewards in the form of lower energy bills, greater operational efficiency, and stronger brand appeal to both employees and customers.
Data shared by the Forum highlighted some striking examples. Simple energy-saving measures implemented in day-to-day kitchen operations are already cutting costs by more than £3,000 per site. Meanwhile, investments in modern equipment are reducing carbon emissions by up to 45%.
Menu innovation is also playing a key role. By redesigning popular dishes like chicken curry, businesses have managed to cut costs by 22%, lower emissions by 47%, and reduce calorie content by 10%—all while maintaining customer appeal.
More significant investments, such as electrifying commercial kitchens, are also paying off. Although the upfront cost is estimated at around £50,000, these kitchens are delivering annual savings of between £10,000 and £15,000, with most businesses seeing a return on investment within three to five years.
Mark Chapman, founder of the Zero Carbon Forum, emphasised that sustainability is now a strategic necessity rather than a nice-to-have. “We believe the companies that act now will be the ones that remain competitive,” he said. “Purpose-driven action is no longer optional; it’s a strategic decision that pays off. Businesses that take the lead on sustainability will build resilience, enhance their brand and strengthen their bottom line.”
As the hospitality industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, the message from the Forum is clear: going green isn’t just good for the planet—it’s good for business too.
