⚠️ Real Incident Highlight: Batter Scraps Fire
The National Fire Chiefs Council recently shared a serious incident involving a fish and chip shop:
- The shop closed at 8:00 PM on a Saturday.
- A fire was reported at 4:28 AM the next morning.
- The cause: batter scraps stored in a plastic container near sacks of potatoes.
- The tightly packed, still-hot scraps spontaneously combusted, igniting nearby materials.
Key takeaway: Batter scraps—also known as bits, scrumps, or scraps—can pose a real fire hazard if not cooled and disposed of properly.
NFFF recommendations:
- Always allow scraps to cool completely.
- Dispose of them in metal-lidded bins, placed outside and away from buildings or fencing.
🧯 Don’t Take Risks with Fire Safety
Fire risks in food businesses—especially those using fryers and oils—are real and potentially devastating. Stay protected by ensuring staff are trained, procedures are in place, and waste is disposed of correctly.
We’re here to help. If you have questions or need guidance, please reach out to the NFFF team.
Stay safe,
