The Liberal Democrats have urged the Government to introduce a 5% cut in VAT and reform National Insurance to support the UK’s struggling hospitality sector ahead of this month’s Budget.

Speaking in the Commons, Daisy Cooper MP, the party’s deputy leader and Treasury spokesperson, called for VAT to be reduced from 20% to 15% to boost trade in pubs, restaurants and takeaways. She also proposed a lower National Insurance band for part-time workers to help protect jobs and encourage more flexible employment across hospitality.
