Fish and Chip Shops Unite to Commemorate VE Day 80, Offering Discounts Across the Country on the 8th of May!

On 8^th May 2025, fish and chip shops across the United Kingdom will come together to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Participating establishments will offer a 10% discount on walk-up orders over £50, inviting communities to commemorate this significant milestone with the nation’s beloved dish. This initiative pays tribute to the resilience and unity displayed during World War II. Fish and chips held a special place during the war, remaining one of the few foods not subject to rationing and Sir Winston Churchill himself dubbed them the “Good companions!”. They provided comfort and a sense of normalcy to the British people during challenging times and helped to keep everyone involved in the war effort nourished.

To help the nation celebrate this momentous occasion the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) and Chippy Chat Magazine have put together an online map of businesses offering a discount for orders over £50. To find a participating business go to VEFishandChips.co.uk.

The NFFF is leading this campaign, encouraging fish and chip shops nationwide to participate. NFFF President, Andrew Crook emphasised the importance of this initiative: “This is a unique opportunity to remember how the nation came together to overcome adversity 80 years ago and how they came through it.  It is a humbling thought that the fish and chip industry played a part in the war effort.  Even on the D-Day landings, the initial push into Europe by the Allies, they used “fish” and the response “and chips” as one of the passwords. Fish and chips are still the nations favourite dish and we hope customers make us their preferred choice over the VE Day celebrations this week”
