Frankie’s sustainably-caught haddock recognised by MSC

Frankie’s Fish & Chips has won coveted Marine Stewardship Council Chain of Custody status for its haddock caught in the waters around Shetland.

It follows an assessment by MSC officials of the company’s whitefish supplier Blydoit Fish, which was awarded Chain of Custody for the haddock it sells.

Having gained Chain of Custody for its mussels and scallops, supplied by Blueshell Mussels, in February last year, Frankie’s now sells MSC certified haddock, mussels and king scallops.

These products are identified on the chippy’s menus by the familiar MSC ecolabel – a white tick on a blue background.

MSC Chain of Custody is designed to give consumers and seafood buyers confidence they are buying fish from sustainable fisheries.

It is underpinned by three broad principles – sustainable fish stocks, minimal environmental impact and effective fisheries management.

Frankie’s manager John Gold, who was at Blydoit to see the MSC assessors at work, said: “The provenance of our seafood is very important to us, so it was very pleasing to watch as Blydoit won the approval of the MSC for its haddock.

“Because we had previously secured Chain of Custody for our mussels and scallops, we quickly received notification that we had also been awarded Chain of Custody for the haddock supplied to us by Blydoit.

“Now you can buy a fish supper at Frankie’s in the knowledge that it comes from a sustainable source which will be available for generations to come.”
