Wetherby Whaler flying high with cheque for Yorkshire Air Ambulance

Article Date: 2013-06-06

The Wetherby Whaler in Guiseley celebrated a successful first year’s trading, during which almost 250,000 customers were served, by reinforcing its support for one of Yorkshire’s leading charities.

Phillip and Janine Murphy, owners of the Wetherby Whaler group of fish and chip restaurants and take-aways, presented a cheque for £1,000 to YAA volunteer fundraiser Gerry Sayers.

The former and original Harry Ramsden’s underwent a £500,000 refurbishment designed to bring the restaurant up to date, while maintaining the atmosphere the restaurant was renowned for.  The famous chandeliers were updated with brand new fittings, ensuring the restaurant will deliver the same impact on 21st Century customers as it did 80 years ago.

Guests of honour at the official opening 12 months ago included Harry Ramsden’s daughter Shirley Dillon and granddaughter Jayne Dinan who travelled from Ireland for the occasion.

The first anniversary was marked with a day of music, face painting, balloon modelling, cake and fizz.

Despite the challenging economic climate, the Wetherby Whaler group has continued to expand in recent times and now has more than 200 employees. It was started when Phillip and Janine Murphy bought the original restaurant in Wetherby in 1989. A second generation of the Murphy family is now involved; daughters Joanne and Caroline. This has spurred further investment in the business and led to the development of the new flagship restaurant in Guiseley.

Phillip Murphy said:  “It’s been an amazing first year in Guiseley and I would like to extend my thanks to all our staff for their hard work. Our investment saved a Yorkshire landmark and ensured the tradition of fine fish and chips continued at this important location.

“The support shown by customers has been incredible and I truly believe that we have recaptured the atmosphere and flavours of Harry Ramsden’s best years.”

Janine Murphy said: “As a business we have supported the Yorkshire Air Ambulance for a number of years, raising many thousands of pounds through the generosity of our customers.

“We were delighted to be able to mark a successful first year in Guiseley by making this significant donation on behalf of our customers.”
