Article Date: 2015-09-29

This year’s Frankie’s Charity Cycle Sportive, held in August, raised a total of £6,600.

The proceeds have been split between the Fishermen’s Mission, Cancer Research UK and Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Representatives of the Fishermen’s Mission and Cancer Research UK were presented with cheques by Frankie’s staff last week.

Aubrey Jamieson, Fishermen’s Mission superintendent in Shetland, said: "Frankie’s has been a very generous supporter of the Mission, and we are hugely grateful to all the cyclists who raised such a fantastic sum.”

Accepting a cheque on behalf of Cancer Research UK, Martin Henderson, chairman of the 2016 Relay for Life Committee, added his thanks, saying: "You should be very proud of the fantastic job you do in supporting local charities.”

Forty-two cyclists took part in the event on Sunday 30thAugust.

Twenty-three cyclists completed the 40-mile ride – two times around a lap from Brae to Voe, up Dales Voe and back round to Brae – with Pete Fenwick of Shetland Wheelers first home.

Seventeen did the 20-mile ride – one lap of the same course – with Dugie Gunn from Muckle Roe leading the group over the line, while 12-year-old Flora Quinnell was the first of the two riders in the 10-mile ride from Brae to Voe and back.

Since it began in 2011, the Frankie’s Cycle Sportive has raised almost £27,000 for charities.

Frankie’s manager Carlyn Kearney said:"I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped us raise money for our chosen charities.”
