Scotts Fish & Chips Retains Gluten Free Accreditation

Article Date: 2019-02-19

A North Yorkshire chippie’s commitment to catering for clients with gluten free dietary requirements has been recognised for the third year running.

Scotts Fish and Chips, located on the A64 at Bilbrough, near York, has again been presented with a GF (gluten free) accreditation from Coeliac UK, for its gluten free versions of the nation’s favourite dish.

Valid for one year, the certificate is awarded to restaurants that show commitment to the preparation and service of food that meets the needs and expectations of customers with coeliac disease, and those following a gluten free diet.

Retaining this national standard comes on the back of the restaurant and take away scooping two awards at the National FreeFrom Eating Out Awards, where it won gold in both the Best Fish and Chip Shop and the Focus on Gluten categories.

Judges in those awards commended Scotts for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, as well as its proficiency in the service of gluten free food, instilling confidence in customers with gluten free needs.

Tony Webster, owner of Scotts Fish and Chips, said: "Retaining this gluten-free accreditation from Coeliac UK is very important to us, as we have a loyal army of customers who regularly travel from far and wide for a plate of our gluten-free fish and chips.

"It’s important to stress that just because we have won the accreditation before it didn’t mean that we would automatically be given it again. Our staff are given regular training and follow very strict guidelines.

"We are very proud of our gluten-free dishes, and having our accreditation renewed means those with an intolerance can enjoy their fish and chips safe in the knowledge it has been prepared to the highest standard, whatever their dietary requirements.”

Coeliac disease is a lifelong autoimmune disease caused by a reaction to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Some people are also sensitive to oats. Those with the condition have to follow a gluten-free diet for life.

Symptoms include (but not exclusive): bloating, diarrhoea, nausea, tiredness, sudden weight loss, hair loss and anaemia.

Research conducted by Coeliac UK has shown that fish and chips is one of the things that people diagnosed with coeliac disease miss most.
