Rhinos Captain Tackles Meal With Fan

Article Date: 2016-04-19

A Leeds Rhinos-mad family enjoyed a meal with club stalwart, Danny Maguire, after winning a competition organised by Wetherby Whaler.

Sally Lawn from Otley won a meal for four with the Leeds Rhinos captain and his family after entering a competition on the Wetherby Whaler’s website.

Sally took along her husband, Mike Lawn, brother, Simon Hepworth, and nephew, William Hepworth, to the Yorkshire chain’s Guiseley restaurant to tuck into a meal of fish and chips with the stand-off half and his family.

Sally, said: "I was over the moon to find out I had won the competition. I don’t get to go to as many games as I would like, but whenever I do get a chance I’m always impressed by the family atmosphere and the players’ attitude towards fans.

"They’re always willing to spare a few minutes to take photos and sign autographs, which is something you don’t see in every sport and means a lot to the fans.

"My brother and nephew are huge fans and hardly ever miss a game, so when I invited them along they were absolutely thrilled. It’s something we’ll all remember and talk about for a long time.

"It was lovely to meet Danny and his family. Not many other professional sports players would be prepared to sit down with fans for a meal and a chat, but Danny is really down to earth. You can tell he’s a Leeds lad, born and bred!”

Phillip Murphy, who co-owns the Wetherby Whaler Group with his wife, Janine, said:"We’re pleased to be able to organise this competition thanks to our ongoing partnership with the Leeds Rhinos.

"Like us, the Rhinos are family-orientated and do their best to make sure that they provide a family-friendly atmosphere, which is testified to by the fact that Danny, who is part of the Rhinos Respect initiative, brought his wife and son along too.

"We have a great relationship with Leeds Rhinos and we hope to run more competitions with money-can’t-buy prizes soon, so rugby fans need to keep eye on our social media channels for more details.”
