Article Date: 2019-03-15

Paignton Pier Chippy Co. have earned the coveted MSC certification which means they can now use the MSC blue fish label on their cod, haddock and plaice suppers. The blue MSC label comes with a solid guarantee that the fish is sourced from a certified sustainable fishery.

The demand for traceable, sustainably caught fish and seafood is increasing around the world. In fact, recent MSC-commissioned research* has shown concern for our future, with 83% of seafood diners agreeing that we need to protect seafood for future generations. It also shows that 8 in 10 seafood diners (81%) want sustainability claims independently verified.

Owner Lorraine Arnold, although relatively new to the industry, is passionate about providing quality fish and chips that is sustainably sourced and believes that when it comes to providing high quality, there can be no compromise. So much so, Paignton Pier Chippy Co. was one of the finalists of the UK’s best new fish and chip shops at the 2019 National Fish & Chip Awards.

Having the MSC blue fish label on the menu means that all the fish served at Paignton Pier Chippy Co. is traceable back through the supply chain – from certified sustainable boats to the final point on sale in their shop.

Lorraine Arnold, owner of Paignton Pier Chippy Co., said: “Paignton Pier Chippy Co. are delighted to have been awarded the MSC certification within our first year of opening, and being 1 of only 3 Fish & Chip shops in Torbay to receive it! Being 100% committed to only using fish from sustainable sources, ALL of the fish sold at Paignton Pier Chippy Co. is MSC certified, Cod, Haddock and Plaice. We believe The Fish & Chip industry has a huge responsibility in ensuring our fish supplies are plentiful for future generations, and Paignton Pier Chippy Co. is humble in playing a small part in this very important scheme”

Loren Hiller, Commercial Officer at MSC, said: “Paignton Pier Chippy Co. clearly realise how crucial sustainable sourcing is for the future of the industry as well as their customers. They recognise that the MSC blue fish label can play an important role in giving customers independent assurance that their fish comes from a sustainable source and that it can be traced from ocean to plate. Our research finds that the MSC label is a really important tool for consumers when choosing sustainable option quickly and easily. We’re delighted to have them on board, and more chippies should follow in their footsteps!"

Becoming MSC certified is easier thanks to a partnership between MSC and the NFFF. Restaurants or shops that already hold a Quality Award can apply for MSC certification at a discounted price. Visit this page for more details.
