Nottingham’s Sandiacre Fish Bar is holding a fundraiser this September to celebrate achieving Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification.
The news means the restaurant can now use the MSC ‘blue tick’ label on its fish assuring customers that the fish sold has been responsibly caught using sustainable methods.
To raise awareness of the shop’s successful MSC certification, on Monday 5th September, customers will be able to enjoy discounted fish and chips in exchange for a donation to local hospice, Treetops. Sandiacre is a regular supporter of Treetops and last year raised over £1,000 for the charity which provides nursing care and emotional support for local adults and their families.
Owned by Michael Piponides for over 30 years, Sandiacre Fish Bar is a family affair, counting Michael’s wife Demetra and son Mario among the seven staff. The MSC certification is yet another accolade for the restaurant, which was recently awarded 5 stars for food hygiene as well as the National Fish Friers Federation’s Quality Award.
Michael explains what the news means to the restaurant, "I was very keen to be involved with the MSC as I believe seafood sustainability and responsible fishing is vital to our industry. We are really proud that our customers have the opportunity to enjoy MSC sustainable cod and chips.”
George Clark, UK Commercial Manager at the MSC, adds, "Congratulations to Sandiacre Fish Bar who are doing their bit to protect the future of the oceans by selling MSC certified fish. We hope that their success will encourage other chippies in the area to follow their lead and offer their customers a sustainable choice.”
The business achieved the certification via a joint pilot scheme between MSC and the National Federation of Fish Friers. The online application process is designed to be time-saving and cost-effective, ideal for fish and chip shops looking to take the lead on sustainability in their area.
Choosing MSC labelled seafood from fisheries, retailers, brands and restaurants guarantees sustainable, traceable methods and helps protect the life in our oceans for generations to come.
