Kingfisher Fish and Chips, to star in top U.S. cookery show!

Article Date: 2017-12-07

Kingfisher Fish & Chips in Plymouth, the UK’s No 1 chippy, has completed filming for an upcoming starring role in a top US cookery show.

Celebrity chef and host of Simply Ming, Ming Tsai, invited owners Craig Maw and Nikki Mutton to take part in one of three special episodes sponsored by the Norwegian Seafood Council to air in early 2018. Each episode focuses on a different chef demonstrating their special use of seafood from Norway. The hugely popular show has viewing figures of over 1 million per week and strives to help home cooks achieve a balance between East-West food.

The full day of filming for the show started early with Craig and Nikki taking Chef Ming on a trip to Brixham Fish Market where he was able to choose from an amazing array of fresh fish. From there, they travelled back to Kingfisher where Craig and Nikki chatted to Chef Ming about why they feel frozen at sea, MSC certified Norwegian fish makes such great fish and chips, as well as their experiences over the past year of being the UK’s No 1. Both chefs then cooked together, sharing tricks of the trade along the way. Chef Ming created a simple twist on fish and chips using hake and code fish cheeks from the market while Craig served up a traditional plate of delicious Norwegian cod and chips.

Explaining his experience at the market and meeting with Kingfisher owners, Nikki and Craig, Chef Ming said, "I was really impressed with Brixham Fish Market. It was so clean, well-run and they had so many species of fish, I lost count. It was lovely meeting and cooking with Nikki and Craig. They are such nice people and their fish and chips were spot on – especially their tasty tartar sauce!”

Craig added, "This year just gets more surreal! Never did we think we’d be appearing on US television with a celebrity chef – but what a brilliant experience. Chef Ming has been great fun and we’ve loved sharing tips and tricks with him. We think MSC certified Norwegian fish makes some of the freshest, tastiest fish and chips there is so it’s great to champion it among a wider audience. We hope Ming has enjoyed his brief snapshot of Plymouth and Devon and a taste of a delicious, traditional British fish supper”.

Kingfisher is known for having the ‘most sustainable seafood menu in the world’. It holds the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) quality award, is one of just two chippies to be awarded the maximum 3 star rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association and has the highest rating from Fish to Fork. In November 2017, the shop was awarded gold at the FreeFrom Eating Out Awards in recognition of its gluten-free offering. Craig and Nikki recently completed a 13,000 mile trip covering the UK and Japan in which they served 11,000 portions of fish and chips to promote the industry.
