As a result of the incredibly high standards of entrants, MSC certified Richardson^s Fish Bar in Lancashire and Olley^s Fish Experience of Herne Hill, London have also been ‘highly commended^ by the judges for their commitment to the sustainable fishing message.

The Good Catch award has been part of the Fish & Chip Shop Awards for three years. A previous winner of the Good Catch award was Colman’s Fish & Chip Shop in South Shields.  Colman’s are MSC certified and are fully supportive of fish sourced from sustainable and well managed fishing grounds, seeking full traceability of fish and seafood. Richard Ord from Colman’s recommends owners of all ambitious and progressive fish & chip shops enter the competition for these awards: ‘I have been involved with the competition, entering a number of categories, for the last few years and I have seen my sales increase as a direct result of being a regional finalist in the main award category on two occasions and by winning the Good Catch and Best Independent Restaurant Award categories.’

The MSC runs the only widely recognised environmental certification and ecolabelling programme for wild capture fisheries. It is also the only seafood ecolabel that meets the highest international ecolabelling guidelines. In order to use the MSC label, every link in the supply chain – from ocean to plate – has to be certified for traceability so that if you buy fish with the MSC tick, you know if can be traced back to the certified sustainable fishery that caught it. Cod, haddock, coley and pollock are all available with the blue MSC ecolabel.
