‘FRYING’ WITH THE HEALTHIEST FISH AND CHIP TAKEAWAYS

Article Date: 2014-12-02

Fish and chip shops offering healthier choices were today (2 December 2014) recognised for their endeavours as they compete for the Healthy Eating ‘Fish and Chips’ Award as part of the 2015 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish.

Sponsored by LoSalt, the UK’s leading reduced sodium salt, the Healthy Eating ‘Fish and Chips’ Award is a new category introduced for the 2015 awards. It acknowledges UK fish and chip businesses that excel in educating and informing their customers about healthy choices and the nutritional values of fish and chips.

The three shortlisted businesses are:

Towngate Fisheries in Bradford, West Yorkshire Fish City in Ballynahinch, County Down Harbourside Fish & Chips in Plymouth, Devon.

To get to this stage of the competition, the finalists were judged across a variety of criteria including evidence of menu development and innovation when promoting healthier options to customers and employee training procedures focusing on healthier products and ingredients.

Caroline Klinge, Technical Sales and Marketing Manager at LoSalt, commented: "Our research shows that 64 per cent of people like to be offered healthier options when it comes to takeaway food. As a result, 93 per cent of fish and chip shops think it is relevant to offer healthier options to their customers and the industry is making huge strides in this area.

"Over 450 fish and chip shops are now working with us to offer a reduced sodium salt option to season the nation’s favourite takeaway and many are also offering grilled options, frying in healthier oils and serving healthy side dishes as well. This award recognises the hard work and innovation that fish and chip shops are putting into offering customers healthy choices.”

Paul Williams, Chief Executive of Seafish, said: "Research into fish and chips shows that it is a natural, nutritious meal providing the body with an excellent source of protein - far better than most other takeaway foods.

"We are overwhelmed at the positive response of this new award category. It is so important to recognise those businesses that go the extra mile to not only offer customers healthier alternatives but to be ambassadors for our national fish, championing its nutritional contents.

"We hope this will encourage more fish and chip businesses to follow suit and take an interest in contributing to safeguard the future of the fish frying industry. I wish the three finalists the best of luck in the final.”

The National Fish & Chip Awards recognise the quality, value and choice offered by fish and chip businesses across the UK. The overall winners for all award categories will be announced at a grand awards ceremony at The Lancaster London Hotel on 20 January 2015.
