Article Date: 2014-12-02

THE NATIONAL FISH & CHIP AWARDS ANNOUNCE SHORTLIST FOR POTATO SUSTAINABILITY AND RESPONSIBLE SOURCING

The finalists for the From Field to Frier Award category were announced as part of the 2015 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish.

Sponsored by Isle of Ely Produce Limited, the award celebrates fish and chip businesses with excellent potato knowledge and responsible sourcing methods, as well as their skills in producing the finest quality chips.

The three businesses that have made the final cut are:

Kingfisher Fish & Chips in Plymouth, Devon
Moore’s Fish & Chips in Castle Douglas, Dumfries
Galloway and Simpsons Fish & Chips in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

Oliver Boutwood, Director at Isle of Ely Produce, commented: "This award, which is now in its third year, has really grasped the attention and imagination of both farmers and friers alike and it has become a part of our intrinsic values here at Isle of Ely. Chip shop owners are really starting to think about the whole journey of their potato brand and some even tell customers which field their chips were grown in.

"As part of our sponsorship of the From Field to Frier Award category, we also hold a very successful open day every year which was attended by over 100 suppliers and friers in 2014. We also organised the world^s first potato street race featuring local farmers produce in which the teams ran with 20kg of potatoes on their backs.”

Paul Williams, Chief Executive of Seafish, said: "With fish sustainability currently at the forefront of many industry discussions, it’s easy to overlook the significance of potato provenance.

"It is important to recognise the responsible sourcing methods being employed and I am happy to say that each year fish and chip businesses from across the country are taking greater diligence and increasing pride in sourcing only the best potatoes.

"There was an extremely high calibre of entrants this year, resulting in a tough judging process. However, I can say with confidence that our finalists are at the top of the league when it comes to potato responsible sourcing practices. I’m looking forward to seeing who comes out on top.”

The overall national winner will be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony at The Lancaster London Hotel held on 20 January 2015.

The National Fish & Chip Awards recognise the quality, value and choice offered by fish and chip businesses across the UK.
