Fish Friers

From Field to Frier Award nominees

Article Date: 2013-11-19

Fish and chip businesses across the country that employ and promote responsible sourcing and sustainability practices were today (Tuesday 19 November) recognised as part of the 2014 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish.

Sponsored by Isle of Ely Produce Limited, the ‘From Field to Frier Award’ celebrates businesses with an excellence in potato knowledge, sourcing and storage, as well as their attention to detail and skill in producing quality chips.

Three fish and chip businesses have made the final cut for this category as part of the National Fish & Chip Awards 2014. They are:

Burton Road Chippy in Lincoln, Lincolnshire. The Boundary in Market Deeping, Lincolnshire. French’s Fish & Chip Shop in Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk.

They will now attend the 2014 awards ceremony at the Lancaster London hotel on 22 January 2014, at which the overall winner of this award category will be announced.

Oliver Boutwood, Director at Isle of Ely Produce, said: “This award, which is now in its second year, has really grasped the attention and imagination of both farmers and friers alike and it has become a part of our intrinsic values at Isle of Ely.

“As part of our sponsorship of the From Field to Frier Award category, we hold a very successful open day every year, have filmed a video marking the journey of the potato from seed to frier and also created the world^s first street race featuring local farmers who all run with 20kg of potatoes on their backs.”

Paul Williams, CEO of Seafish, said: “Each year we see fish and chip businesses across the UK become increasingly involved in responsible potato sourcing and sustainability practices.

“The extremely high calibre of entries this year has made the competition even more exciting and the judging panel found it very tough determining the final shortlist. The three finalists deserve to be recognised and we look forward to see who is going to come out on top.”
