Fish and Chip Shops Start to Re-Open Online

Article Date: 2020-05-01

Elderly fish and chips lovers may need to get tech-savvy if they want to keep enjoying their favourite meal, says fish and seafood supplier JJ Foodservice.

Government guidelines state that takeaways that re-open are encouraged to have a safe pre-ordering system in place which enables customers to order online, by App or by phone.

“Our sales figures are showing us that many shops are re-opening – and doing it online”, said Chief Operating Officer for JJ Foodservice, Mushtaque Ahmed.

“This means that you won’t be able to simply walk into your favourite shop and place an order anymore.”

“If you’re desperate for cod and chips, you will need to order it in advance, online or on the phone, and only collect it once you’ve been allocated a slot and your meal is ready.”

The change in ordering methods could be a shock for more traditional customers, particularly elderly people, who many not even own a mobile phone.

JJ’s fish sales increased by 45% in April 2020, compared with the previous month when the lockdown was first announced. The wholesaler supplies more than 2500 shops, which is 25% of the UK fish and chip market.

“It’s been an extremely tough few weeks for fish and chip shop operators. Many family businesses have had to shut down for the safety of their customers and staff”, said Ahmed.

The financial impact of the crisis, and the fluctuating cost of fish, could result in more “diverse menus” in future, including “chicken, veggie and vegan” options.

“One thing’s for sure”, added Ahmed. “This is a sector with passion, resilience, and – as it slowly begins to get back on its feet – will continue to be at the hearts of our communities.”

JJ Foodservice sells a range of fish and chip shops essentials including sustainably sourced, fish, seafood, pickles, mushy peas, condiments, biodegradable packaging and soft drinks. The wholesaler is the founder and organiser of Women in Fish and Chips and sister company to restaurant website builder FOODit.
