FISH AND CHIP FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR STAFF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT AWARD

Article Date: 2014-09-25

Three of the UK’s top fish and chip businesses have been shortlisted in the Staff Training and Development Award category as part of the 2015 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish.

The shortlisted businesses that now have to ‘out-fry’ one another to lift the national title are Burton Rd Chippy in Lincoln, Lincolnshire; The Frying Squad in Bangor, County Down and Top Gun Fish & Chip Shop in Whitchurch, Cardiff.

This award category recognises fish and chip businesses that provide their employees with the highest level of training and personal development to ensure their careers and the businesses they work for develop positively. The three finalists were judged across a range of staffing criteria including interview processes, business training policies and staff appraisal procedures.

Award sponsor Philip Blakeman, Managing Director of James T Blakeman & Co Ltd, said: "As a family business with over 50 years’ experience and recognised as one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of sausage and meat products, staff training has always been an important part of our success.

"The future of the fish frying industry relies on enthusiastic youngsters who have a passion to succeed. They must receive quality training and supportive feedback to develop their careers and their prospective businesses.

"As an avid sponsor of the National Fish & Chip Awards, I believe this category showcases those businesses that are a credit to the industry and positively encourages others to follow suit. We would like to congratulate the finalists in reaching this stage of the competition.”

The finalists will each have to compete in one final round of judging then have an anxious wait to the prestigious awards ceremony held in London on 20 January 2015 at The Lancaster London Hotel to find out who the overall winner will be.

Paul Williams, Chief Executive of Seafish, commented: "Fish provenance is such a topical issue within the industry, it is imperative to protect our future and this begins with well-rounded staff training. We aim to reward those businesses that go the extra mile to ensure their employees receive the knowledge and skills to practice responsible sourcing so our sector can thrive.

"We had some fantastic entries this year; it is rewarding to see so many businesses passionate about ensuring their staff have the best start to their careers. The three finalists without a doubt set an exemplary example to the industry; we would like to wish them every success in their future conquests.”

The National Fish & Chip Awards recognise the quality, value and choice offered by fish and chip businesses across the UK.
