Date: Thursday 25 January 2018

Roll out the red carpet and cue the music as the ‘Oscars’ of the fish frying industry prepare to return for their 30th anniversary – celebrating the Great British tradition of fish and chips, our nation’s favourite takeaway.

Having cast the net far and wide during their judging trawl over the past year, The National Fish & Chip Awards are set to make or break the hearts of friers from around the country as they mark their milestone year.

Marcus Coleman, Chief Executive at Seafish, comments: "We’ve always known that Britain has a special place in its heart for fish and chips – they’re a national institution. Flaky, piping hot succulent fish covered in crispy batter with golden chips – it’s a duo that’s captured the hearts of the British public since the early 19th century.

"With previous winners covering the length and breadth of the country from the Halfway Fish Bar in Dorset to Petrou Brothers in Cambridgeshire to Frankie’s Fish & Chips in Shetland, it’s evident that fish and chips remain an integral part of British tradition, no matter what point you are on the compass.

"As we mark 30 years, I’m pleased to say that the awards still have the same goal since the competition started – to celebrate the great British tradition of fish and chips by recognising the best talent, quality and choice whilst striving to raise the standards of the industry to ensure it thrives for generations to come.”

From humble beginnings, with a single award category in 1987, the awards have grown and diversified over 30 years, and the glitzy awards ceremony is recognised as one of the UK’s most prominent and respected seafood industry events. With 15 categories encompassing everything from traditional takeaways to mobile operators, winning an award is regarded as one of the highest industry honours.

The flagship Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award, which currently has a top 10 regional shortlist, is the most hotly contested category with the eventual winner being named the UK’s ‘best fish and chip takeaway’.

Being successful in the awards is a life-changing experience, with previous winners reporting increased footfall and turnover of up to 100%. Others have gone on to launch own-branded products and have travelled the world serving up their award-winning fish and chips.
