Colmans of South Shields wins sustainability award

Article Date: 2013-02-13

A fish and chip shop is continuing to batter the opposition after picking up another award.

Staff at Colmans of South Shields are celebrating after picking up the Sustainable Restaurant Association Award at the prestigious Les Routiers Awards.

It comes less than a year after owner Richard Ord met with Prince Charles to discuss sustainability in the fish and chip industry and three years after the Ocean Road eatery won the inaugural Good Catch Award, also for sustainability.

He said: “Sustainability is something which has always been extremely important to Colmans.

We have always sourced locally caught fish and seafoods - MSC certified when possible. It it is imperative that everything in the restaurant and takeaway is responsibly sourced as all environmental issues are of paramount importance to us.

The whole team is thrilled to win another award and it’s wonderful to once again be recognised as one of the best in the industry – something that our customers tell us every day.”

Mr Ord and the other previous winners of the Good Catch Award met with The Prince of Wales last May.

From the 12 categories in the Les Routiers Awards Colmans of South Shields was one of only two winners from the North East.

Competition has been fierce this year but the judges believe that the winners of this year’s awards have consistently demonstrated exceptional service, hospitality and quality of food throughout the year.

Les Routiers UK & Ireland said: “This year has been so competitive! We’ve had such good feedback from the many fans of our nominees, together with outstanding performance by all, that it has made the judging process this year one of the toughest we’ve ever encountered.

“Recognised by Les Routiers, the industry and their customers for being the ‘best in their class’, we extend our warmest congratulations to all of our worthy winners!”

This latest award comes just months after Colmans also scored a place in the Good Food Guide for the third year running.

The restaurant has also previously picked up UKTV Gary Rhodes Local Food Heroes’ National Award, the Best UK Restaurant in the National Fish and Chip Awards and Best UK Takeaway in the BBC Radio 4 Food & Farming Awards.
