Colmans of South Shields is the only fish and chip restaurant in the North East to be named in the Good Food Guide 2014.

It’s the fourth year in a row the Ocean Road chippy has made the UK’s bestselling restaurant guide and is the only South Tyneside eatery to make the list.

Richard Ord, fourth generation owner of the restaurant and take away, said: “We’re thrilled to be included in this prestigious guide again.

“It’s a real honour to make the list for a fourth year and we couldn’t be happier with what the reviewers said about Colmans.”

It is one of only 10 restaurants in Tyne and Wear and one of only 23 in the region to make the annual book which was released this month.

The entry for Colmans says: “’The finest fish and chips I have had in 65 years’ was the verdict of one reporter after a meal at this ever-green family-run restaurant (established in 1926).

“Unpretentious, no-frills high-quality fished cooked in ‘secret recipe’ batter, served alongside expertly fried chips are what keep Colmans ahead of the pack.”

The Good Food Guide is compiled from scratch every year and inclusion is seen as one of the highest honours in the food industry.

Restaurants gain a place in the guide by meeting high standards while impressing independent inspectors who have been directed to the eatery by feedback from the public.

Richard added: “For us, this is what makes making the Good Food Guide so special, the fact that it is a combination of experts and the public. 

“Our customers are so important to us and they have always been extremely supportive over the years, so we can’t thank them enough for their positive feedback. 

“Everyone at Colmans is just delighted to be in this position for a fourth time and we all hope to continue making the guide for many years to come.”

It’s another catch for the business which earlier this year was named the number one traditional chip shop in Britain by men’s magazine Esquire and gained the Sustainable Restaurant Association Award in the prestigious Les Routiers Awards.
