In just six years Jem Hamit and family have successfully opened five fish and chip shops in the West Midlands - three under the Atlantis name. Shops in Droitwich, Sutton Coldfield, Castle Bromwich and Erdington have now been followed by Quinton, Birmingham. Hewigo have supplied new high efficiency ranges to four locations.

Jem Hamit explains how this ‘one-a-year’ development came about. "My family has always been in wet fish wholesaling and of course we supply fish and chip shops. One of our customers in Droitwich was selling theirs and we thought why not give it a go. We went for it in a big way and found a formula that works.” The Hamit’s plan to open more outlets when suitable premises become available.

"Phillip Purkiss and his team at Hewigo have been extremely supportive right from the start providing excellent value for money ranges, sound advice and service and naturally being in the Birmingham area also helps,” adds Jem.

The Quinton location has an adjoining restaurant area and is fitted out in a way that does not in any way resemble the ‘usual’ fish and chip outlet. Nowhere to be seen are stainless steel front panels but instead blue herringbone style tiling. Wood finishing has been used including a wooden inlay into the top of the counter. The restaurant has an old-fashioned feel with wooden upholstered seating, mosaic style lampshades and a host of pictures in antique framing.

In contrast, the Hewigo frying range is ultra-modern incorporating the latest high efficiencyburners, computerised control and a fully integrated filter system. Jem adds, "We wanted to be different and it has proved very successful yet we have never lost sight that a superbly cooked quality product is vital. As you would expect as wet fish wholesalers only fresh fish is served in our shops.”
